Lesioning surgeries are a type of functional neurosurgery for the treatment of predominantly unilateral dystonia or tremor refractory to medications. They are performed only in carefully selected patients after appropriate presurgical evaluation, discussion and counselling. Unlike deep brain stimulation surgeries, these surgeries are used to treat only one side of the body.
We offer two types of lesioning surgeries:
1) Thalamotomy
2) Pallidotomy
The procedure is done in awake state under local anaesthesia. Lesioning surgeries are often considered in patients who do not have financial or social support to undergo DBS and who have predominantly unilateral tremor/dystonia or when significantly asymmetrical disease with dominant side severely affected when bilateral.
