The NIMHANS Parkinson’s disease and movement disorder subspecialty deals with a variety of disorders which classify under “Movement Disorders”. These include: 

  • Parkinson’s disease, Essential tremor, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Corticobasal Degeneration, Multiple System Atrophy, Parkinson plus syndromes, Diffuse Lewy body disorders, Spinocerebellar Ataxias, Friedreich’s Ataxia, Huntington’s disease, NBIA, etc.
  • Problems like tremor, dystonia (including torticollis, Writer’s Cramp, Blepharospasm, focal and generalized dystonias), Hemifacial spasm, tics, chorea, athetosis, ballism, myoclonus, or a combination of these problems.
  • Secondary Movement Disorders as a result of trauma (e.g. head injury), hypoxia, birth asphyxia, kernicterus (severe jaundice at birth), infections of brain (e.g. encephalitis), stroke, metabolic disturbances, etc.
